Manual sort grayed out

Asked by Don Myers

Before switching to Ubuntu, I used a windows program to sort pictures for slide shows for my business. I would download the pictures to a folder, then manually drag pictures to the order in which I wanted them, and then I would rename them in that order. GThumb sometimes allows me to manually move the thumbnails to a different order, and sometimes it won't let me do it, and under the sort option, manual sort is grayed out. I can't figure out why it is sometimes working and sometimes I can't do the manual sort.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!!!!!!! Thank you!!!!!!!!!

I think I found the problem. I don't use gthumb very much, but after some digging on the Internet I think I found some information that explains your problem.

The reason you can only sometimes reorder images is probably because not all the images have been added to the catalog. gThumb is a catalog based image viewer meaning that it maintains extra information about the files that it works with. That information is stored in libraries which are a collection of catalogs.

In order to be able to sort images by something other than the basic file data ( Name, Path, Size, Modification Time, Exif Time, or Comment), gThumb has to create and maintain a catalog of extra information about the file.

Once a group of images is being tracked in a catalog, you can sort them by dragging and dropping them and the catalog will store that additional information for you. Then gThumb can read that data when it comes time to run the slide show and present the images in your preferred sort order.

I found a handy Tutorial that alludes to some of this here: http://linux.about.com/od/linux101/a/desktop06h.htm

I hope this helps.
