Using Gthumb on NTFS disks

I would like to manage pictures on a NTFS-Windows partition (creating catalogs, comments etc.), but Gthumb does not save any inputs. This problem appears only on this read-only mounted partition, while all pictures in Linux partitions can be managed without problems. Because Gthumb saves all inputs not beside the pictures, but within the Linux folders, I do not understand this limitation. Is this a bug? Is there a way, to solve it?

Karl,

by default Linux is unable to write to NTFS partitions.
However, it is now posible to use an utility which adds this support. Please follow the instructions of this page on how to enable this in Ubuntu:

your proposal does not solve my problem. I habe mounted the NTFS partition "read only", because I want to be absolutely sure, that this partition is not damaged by Linux accesses. So far as I know, the Linux access drivers are very new, and I would like to wait for expieriences of the Linux community, before I will rely on this technique.

I do not understand, why Gthumb can not be used with a write protected partition. All comments and catalog information are not saved on the partition with the pictures, but in the personal folder in Linux. Is there no way, to work with "read only" partitions?

Cesare,

the steps are:

- booting Ubuntu 7.04 with mounting of NTFS partition "read only"
- Starting of Gthumb
- Using "Gthumb - File - Open" to open the desired picture folder on the NTFS partition
- Selecting the desired picture with right mouse key and choosing "Comments"
- Entering a text (e.g. "Test")
- Confirming with "Ok"
- Closing GThumb
- Opening GThumb again
- Checking the "Comment" section of the picture: Nothing was saved!

Well,

adding a commet to pictures implies creating a local hidden comment directory in the directory where the images are stored.
You can see this clearly if you open your .xsession-errors log.
Hence the failure....

thank you, that answers the question. I assume, the same is valid for assigning pictures to catalogs.

Unfortunately, there is no solution of my problem. Google Picasa, which can be used in a similar manner, does not touch the partition at all. I think, this behavior would also be a very convincing feature for GThumb.

Why not filing a bug report in the Gnome bugzilla then?
Grant you, its in the wishlist category but they might accomodate it.
Actually, you can file the bug in Launchpad, and then link it to an upstream bug.
