There are probably several other programs that can do these things; these are the ones that come to my mind right now... You can always put all pictures in a compressed folder and send them in an email. That is one way to do it. You can use GIMP to compress an image too. I am not sure if GIMP can compress several pictures at once though. If you want to compress several images all at once, you can try digiKam.

Do the following:

1: Start Gimp
2: Click File > Open
3: Choose the file
4: Click Image
5: Click Scale Image
6: Scale the image

Hope it helps.

thanks that did help. Also, what is a good pixel size? I'm not sure, I
put 1000x700, will that be good to open up on other end?

Larger the size, better the image would be for printing, etc. Having
said that, you may want to try several sizes and see at which point you
get the perfect balance between size of the picture (in pixels) and size
of the file (in kb). One more thing to keep in mind: when scaling the
image keep the aspect ratio constant (keep that little chain icon next
to the pixels button linked) so that you don't end up cropping a part of
your image.

Do you use F-Spot? If you do use this application to manage your photographs and it's photographs you're sending you can use the export facility to reduce the size of your photos and copy them into a folder ready for zipping.

First go to the Edit menu and Manage Extensions.
Expand the Export tab and make sure Zip Export is enabled.
Close that, and you're ready.

1. Select your images in F-Spot
2. File -> Export to Compressed file...
3. Choose a name and location
4. Decide on a maximum pixel length to scale your images down to.*
5. Check the size of your zip file and then attach it to your email.

*i.e. if your image is 2048 by 1080, resizing it to 1024 will make it 1024 by 540. The same is true for portrait images but the other way up!

Good luck,
Jon
