Cannot view Gimp xcf files

Asked by measekite

It appears that Gimp xcf files are not supported and cannot be viewed. Gimp is the photo editor of choice in Linux. When you right click on a jpg and choose Open With (lets say Gimp) you can then edit and save the image.

Here lies the issue.

I want to keep my original jpg. Lest say myname.jpg

I want to save the edited data associated with layers so I need to save in xcf. Lets say myname.xcf

Now I have two files taking up disk space. Gthumb cannot read the myname.xct file.

Now I could resave the edited file under another name after flattening the file as myname_edit.jpg but now the image is a little degraded due to the lossy format of jpg files and then have 3 large files taking up disk space.

If there is not update for gthumb to read Gimp xcf files then I would like to know when that will happen.

Measekite,

Thanks for your question. Sorry but until this moment, gthumb project has no plans to support xcf files. If it helps, you can export your work in png, that has less loss than jpeg or try to save the jpegs with a better quality.
