gThumb does not display raw thumbnails

gThumb displays an empty placeholder for all of my Canon CR2 image files.
If I click on the placeholder then the raw file is correctly displayed.
'RawFormat' extension is checked
I have implemented the ppa for gThumb but this apparently makes no difference.

Running Mint 12 (Oneric) with gThumb Version 2.13.90

although mint is based on ubuntu, they've made changed to ubuntu, so you'll have to ask your question on mint's forum.
