Getting stuff into Ubuntu

What would be the way to get digital pictures from the cd rom into Ubuntu 6.06 and into a folder called My Pics so that I could work on them using Gimp. The same question applies to getting pictures from a USB plug in card reader. A blow by blow instructions would be most helpful as I find Linux to be the most unfriendly and frustrating OS. I don't consider myself a computer wizard in any way so any help would be appreciated. Thank you R.B.
