Logitech Quickcam Communicate STX does not work

Asked by cwcasey

I have tried to get this thing to work with my New Motherboard. Had a 64K AMD but lost it to a Elec. Storm. Had a new Motherborad put now I am ASUS powered with intel chip.

The web cam worked with the amd, but not with the intel.

I have read all the workaround , tried them all, but nothing. No video at all from the usb webcam.

Any help would be great. OH ubuntu 8.04

Thanks,

I'm this question to bug 227177.

The reason: The camera works with the spca-driver (http://mxhaard.free.fr/spca5xx.html), but it's not included as a part of the linux kernel itself - it has to be manually compiled and/or installed. The bug points out that performing this the "easy way" does not work with Ubuntu 8.04.

So my answer is: The driver exists, and you can attempt to compile it, but you may need to modify the source to be able to.

I'm sorry if this isn't of much help for you.

Regards, Trygve

gspca webcam

First check if your webcam is supported by gspca from here: http://mxhaard.free.fr/spca5xx.html

---- To install the webcam ( you must have an active internet connection ):
1) - We do all from terminal
2) - When the system ask you for password, give your user password, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter

Open a terminal from Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type:

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install cheese camorama build-essential gspca-source linux-headers-$(uname -r)
cd /usr/src
sudo tar -xjvf gspca-source.tar.bz2
cd /usr/src/modules/gspca/
sudo make
sudo make install
sudo modprobe gspca
camorama

If your cam color are no good open the: /etc/modprobe.d/options file

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/options

and add this row at the end of file:
options gspca force_rgb=1

add the module gspca at the end of /etc/modules file, type:

sudo gedit /etc/modules

add a row at the end of file and type:
gspca

Save and exit and reboot your pc reopen Camorama from menu: Applications->Graphics->...

Give me some feedback

The following commands:

sudo apt-get install module-assistant
sudo m-a prepare

... installs a bunch of prerequisites for compiling drivers yourself.

But notice that the failure of compiling this driver on Ubuntu 8.04 is a confirmed bug.

I have tried another option. I have an old 486, so I install 7.10 version on it, and guess what the Webcam works.

My next question is this, if I download the 7.10 for a 586 and install it, the Webcam should work, right? Then if I update to the 8.04 will the Webcam still work, or will the new code for the 586 kill it. I would think that it should stay the same, but you can never tell with the Linux stuff..

It will probably work fine if you make sure that you boot into the older kernel (from 7.10).

It works like this; All kernel-mode drivers has to be compiled against the kernel-headers of the kernel version you are running. 8.04 installs a newer kernel, and therefore also needs newer drivers. However, if you make sure to press ESC when the grub boot-loader is up, you should be able to pick an older kernel (the one from 7.10 is 2.6.22).

I hope this helps :)

I have first got the try the idea, if it works then I will mark the question as Answered, but not until I get an Answer that I can test and get the Cam working with.

I will let the launchpad know if it works and mark it as Answered, that is if it works.

That is to be seen.

Thank for the Info

You need to know that Answered is not the same as Solved.

You also need to know that the only one who can mark a question as Open, is the user who created the question (and perhaps a moderator/administrator). In this case cwcasey.

If I'm not clear enough; I do not have the privileges to mark this question as open, and therefore it is impossible for me to do what you ask me to.

Well nothing that anyone has suggested worked.

I went back to 7.10 and guess what happens?

Everything works, the webcam just works, without having to do a lot of codding work. just plug and play.

So now My Question is What the hell is wrong with 8.04??????

I will stay with 7.10 Untill Ubuntu gets it's act together....Way to many bugs for me. 8.04 is just like Windows....Full of Bugs....

No way to run software..........Just like Windows, waiting for the end user to find and report the bugs.....Don't they test first........I guess not.

You may be cwcasey2001 in person, but you're not logged in as cwcasey2001 on Launchpad - the user who opened the question in the first place - which is the reason why you can't mark the question as Open or Solved.

To answer the question: As pointed in my very first reply to this question - the webcam does not work on 8.04 because of a compiling bug that has yet to be fixed (Link: https://answers.launchpad.net/bugs/227177) - the point I made earlier regarding booting on an older kernel remains valid.

You say 8.04 is full of bugs, and no way to run software - unless I actually see any questions pointing out issues you have other than this one, I will interpret that as frustration. In that case, you have my sympathy - but there is no need to curse.

When I go to the LaunchPad system, I am login as Snowyt, which is the
name of the computer I use. I can also login as cwcasey2001. And you
are right I am frustrated, I have tried the above answer, it did not
work as I stated before. The only way I can get the WebCam to work is
to Delete 8.04 and install 7.10. Of course I have to reformat the hard
drive, so all the information will install correctly. I have noticed
that in 7.10 all the application I had installed worked. In 8.04 it
first delete a lot of the application, saying they are not excepted in
the 8.04 verssion. I do not understand that at all, the upgrade should
see all the application from 7.10.. To me this is a bug. And let me
clear up some of this for you when I say buy, I am MCSE. Microsoft does
not take you applitation away, say they are not approved for the new
verssion. An upgrade is just that, UPGRADE OF THE OS, not taking away
the application you have installed. Ubuntu has a different way of
upgrading, that being taking away application, making the end user look
for ways to get their new products working, and doing a lot of hand
codding. Realty that in it's self speeks of BUGS. The end user should
never have to do hand codding. Even though that is what Linux is all
about. But that is for the LCSE if there is such a thing. I swiched
over years ago from Microsoft to Ubuntu because of the ease of use, and
because the OS was Free Software. The older verssion of the OS where
better, and not so Buggie as this 8.04
Why can't Ubuntu that the Web Cam part of 7.10 and intergrade it with
8.04? That would solve a lot of problems. This is one of the main
problems in the Answer section, but no Ubuntu does noting, they just
wait for the end user to find a work-a-round for the problem. Well are
they paying me to correct THEIR problems. (NO) The latest and greatest
version of the OS should have all the parts of the Older Verssion in it,
working correctly.
Oh, check the status of the #41434, I reopened it......Like I said
Snowty, and cwcasey2001 are one in the same.....

I have done some of the instructions given above.

I got here:
daibarnes@daibarnes:/usr/src$ sudo tar -xjvf gspca-source.tar.bz2
tar: gspca-source.tar.bz2: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
tar: Child returned status 2
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors
daibarnes@daibarnes:/usr/src$

Other commands seemed irrelevant after this as they did not know what they were doing.

Anyway, thought I'd have a go with my camera nonetheless and it worked. Microphone too. Mic quality is a bit dodgy but the picture is there. So thank you to all concerned. I'm running ubuntu 8.04.

Maybe new updates are available since cwcasey tried.

Now I'm off to try and fix my dual monitor problems - as in they are cloned and it's rubbish.

:)

Well I have tried to use the web-cam in 8.04, but it not only does not register, networking shuts down when I plug the device into the USB port and I have to reboot to restart networking. I installed camorama and went into Trace, but nothing happened there. So I installed to gspca-source and tried to build, but that gave me nothing but error messages over incompatible pointer type. 8.04 has been nothing but a problem on this box. It also broke the nVidia drivers so no 3-D either. :^}}
