sh:grub> installed by usb help!!!

Asked by Jen

I have installed (well thought I did) Ubuntu 9.10 on my PC using a usb flash drive, it wouldn't let me do a full install only run beside windows xp (i did it via the usb because for some reason the disk drive won't work - the dvd burner works, the PC sees it but I think they are having a lovers tiff - they won't talk to each other) Ubuntu loaded the first time but then I did an update (found 197 new packages) and now it won't boot it keeps coming up with sh:grub> , I have found about a dozen different codes to write in in this screen but it won't accept anything past the line that comes before the boot command. I want to replace windows with Ubuntu because even though I run avg advanced (yes I did pay for it in more ways than one) I managed to get a few viruses that it has not picked up - bugger. Anyway when I installed Ubuntu windows started changing the time on it's own. I have tried uninstalling the disk drive but it auto detects and then nothing.. How do I fix the Ubuntu problem? Would formatting the PC fix the tiff the dvd burner and the PC are having. if the prob is the motherboard (she could be a cow, my kids think I am) is there no hope for my PC, would being able to install Ubuntu fix the tiff between the dvd burner and the PC . I have Ubuntu installed on the laptop without a problem but Ubuntu won't share the dvd burner from the laptop to the PC, is there another way to fix it all? My laptop is an acer travelmate 4150 and the PC is an IBM think-pad Pentium 4.

U have badly updated .. maybe U missed some step during update ... so start with reading this http://grub.enbug.org/Manual#GrubShell

Then post Ur answers again here for any help.

btw: Also, u can try start with following:

> linux /vmlinuz ro

I tried that code but it would not recognize any of it, I didn't know you could miss a step I just went to system, administration then to update manager, then when that opened i updated and downloaded update packages, I follow the same steps for my laptop and don't have a problem, could it be because of windows and it's endless number of viruses? ( even though we have a virus protection thing), or because I did it via usb? do you have any ideas on how to fix the disk drive prob? or is there a way to share the disk drive with windows from the laptop and install it that way? when ever I put in boot it comes up with no boot kernel

no didn't work, I do now know what the prob is, I got a virus from windows and it has entered the bias so I am up for another motherboard. It's only a Pentium 4 so I will replace the motherboard (around $50) and then it should be problem fixed - damn viruses and windows grrr lol
