menu.lst disappeared in 2.6.31-17-generic X 86-64

Hello,

authomatic update to Ubuntu2.6.31-17-generic resulted in complete invisibility of
menu.lst
Computer inevitably tries to start with memtest.

You can find the new place to configure Grub in
/etc/default/grub

thank you for your help. At last I understood that

grub default = 6

had to be changed to

grub default = 0

Nobody knows where this 6 originated.
