GRUB error no such disk

Asked by Guild on 2010-01-10

Alright, so I'm no technical wiz here, so bear with me.

Anyway, I have a relatively older laptop that died on me a while ago. I was getting a "disk cannot be read" error and since I didn't have any other OS discs around, I downloaded Ubuntu, burned it to a disc, and figured I could wipe the hard drive clean and start anew with Ubuntu. However, I soon found out that the hard drive on my laptop had failed, so I decided to try and use my external hard drive to act as the hard drive for the laptop. So, I installed Linux on it successfully, set the boot order of my laptop to boot my external HDD first, but when it did boot, it went to "GRUB loading..." and then after a while, "error: no such disk" and then a "grub rescue>" to enter commands. I've read up on the issue through hours of searching the internet but most people who are having the issue have a working external and internal hard drive; I don't have the latter. So, is there any way to resolve this using ONLY the external hard drive?

pls take a look at

and concentrate especially on the section under the heading
 'Rescue Mode

The rescue mode is a major GRUB 2 enhancement. If GRUB 2 fails to find a useable grub.cfg and is unable to transfer control to a kernel it will drop to a grub-rescue> prompt. From this prompt the user can investigate problems, make changes, and retry the boot.

The rescue mode provides fewer commands than the normal GRUB prompt line, but also provides these additional commands:

it'll help you rescue existing grub.

btw, did you try leaving the hdd boot sequence in BIOS the same as it was during ubuntu install ? and try booting ubuntu ?

it is worth a try before proceeding with the rescue operation as described on the url above.

Can you help with this problem?
