Thank You for the info. I looked at it and the steps are over my head. Anyway, prior to your answer-- I had uninstalled Ubuntu 9.10 dual boot with winxp pro sp3. Deleted the partition where Ubuntu was installed. Then this time I used the CD(iso) to install Ubuntu(not from the web site using wubi). The first option did not show the windows drive or the clear space. The second option to use the largest space did show the windows system and the clear space. Used that option to install-- ext4 and swap were created-- the full area was used (76gb)-- [under wubi ubuntu was limited to 29gb]. Now, windows does not see the area for Ubuntu, is ok. During install a question came up for Grub [use as is or update] left Grub as it was at the point in installation. So, everything is ok for now, System now boots to Ubuntu as default system-- 2.6.31-17 with windows as last option. If windows is selected then the wubi boot screen comes up to select windows or ubuntu as second option-- ubuntu there will error out--need to remove ubuntu option at that point-- windows will boot clean. The Lucky backups helped-- restore did not work? Had to use drag and drop for home and system. That was 60 to 65% good. Used 4 hours to clean up the system and reinstall some items. System is Good at this point. Ubuntu can see windows drives(partitions) and access the info. So, GRUB?? Afraid to set Grub2. I do not want to install again. I hope You can set Control for all updates for Ubuntu 9.10 to not be damaged by Grub in an update as Yesterday. I do not know for sure which Grub I am using. Don't know how to tell-- will google for help on that. --Thanks again-- Keep up the good work-- someday I can scrap windows, but not just yet. jg

Since you did a clean install of 9.10, Grub_2 is default.

Basically before any installation there are release notes available.
