boot order update

Asked by ndc_home

I have installed ubuntu desktop 9.10. I want to change the boot order, but there is no MENU.LST in the /boot/grub folder. There is a read only file called grub.cfg, which contains what I would expect to see in Menu.lst, but that file can't be changed. I tried "Start-up manager", but the changes made there are ignored.

How does changing boot menu work in 9.10 please? I have searched documents and forums but all mention menu.lst.

The options to run sudo update-grub or sudo grub-mkconfig did not produce the hoped for results. "update" wanted to produce a menu.lst file and the "mkconfig" had error messages.

Checked package loading through Synaptic package management and found Grub2 wasn't loaded. Even though "grub.cfg" was clearly running the boot-up. So I marked Grub 2 for install and ran this.

Following that I retried the Start-up manager package. This now worked fine. Where all you want to do is change time out and default operating system in grub.cfg, then Start-Up manager does the job.

However I do want to edit the operating system names, and so far haven't found which file contain s these. I gather that the list of operating systems is automatically produced. But for some reason it thinks i've still got Windows 7 loaded instead of XP.
