howto get access to grub menu using grub2 to make a fsck

Asked by Richard A Bevis

I want to run a fsck manually. In 9.04 on my old desktop I was given a few seconds to Esc during grub loading... to bring up the recovery screen. By using the down arrow on the keyboard I could reach fsck and hit enter, hurray. With 9.10 on this new laptop I never seem to get the option to go to recovery mode during start up, although I've watched very closely and even pressed Esc at certain likely pauses in the boot process. When I open the terminal to run fsck I get the "warning will robinson" message that my file system is mounted and could be damaged. Can I? 1) get to recovery mode during startup; 2) unmount the file system to check; 3) command the computer to run a fsck on next boot. I don't know if it makes a difference, but I'm running the 64bit version of 9.10 with all updates. As always, any help is greatly appreciated.

Apologies to all,

If I had been a little more observant, I would have noticed that microsecond flash of the aforementioned Esc option coming later in the boot process. Sorry to have wasted peoples time, unless of course, reading about my ignorance is humorous to you. Have a good day.
