GRUB Missing. Need Help

Asked by Junko77

Okay so its a long story but here it is. I have a Toshiba M700 laptop with Windows Vista, I have been a fan of a Ubuntu for a few years now so I decided to get Karmic. I used a Mandriva 2010 One Live cd to free up 55 GB. I installed Karmic on a 50 GB partition and allocated 5 GB for swap. It all worked fine until some stuff started screwing up with the Karmic so I decided to delete it again with the Mandriva live cd. I took the swap and the ext4 partitions and now when I try to boot up it doesn't boot in Vista. It says:

GRUB Loading...

error: no such partition

rescue>

I'm very nervous when it comes to this kind of stuff. I need to know how to fix this and whether or not I've screwed up my windows partition. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Try this to restore Vista:

1. Put the Windows Vista installation disc in the disc drive, and then start
the computer (set to boot from CD in BIOS).

2. Press a key when you are prompted.

3. Select a language, a time, a currency, a keyboard or an input method, and
then click Next.

4. Click Repair your computer.

5. Click the operating system that you want to repair (Vista in this case),
and then click Next.

6. In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt.

7. Once in the command prompt, type exactly Bootrec.exe /FixMbr and then press
ENTER. You will see "operation completed successfully."

8. Reboot and set BIOS to boot from the HDD again.

GRUB will be overwritten in step 7 and Vista's bootloader will once again take
control of loading your OS(s).

Sorry I just realized I don't have the installation disc or the recovery disc.

Can you help with this problem?
