no ubuntu

Asked by endamurtagh@hotmail.com

I have a Dell Dimension desktop which came with vista home premium , after using ubuntu on a netbook i was very intrested in seeing the desktop version, so to avoid doing any damage to Vista, i fitted a second hard drive for ubuntu.
So once i installed it on the drive and rebooted the machine i never was given the option of booting vista or ubuntu, ubuntu became the default operating system (which i do want eventually) and it worked fine.
now i still need vista, so using the recovery CD i managed to get it booting again, but now i have no option of booting ubuntu.
i have been seraching through foums the last two days trying to sort this out. and i give up. i jsut want the machine to give me two options either Vista or Ubuntu.
any ideas or soloutions would be appreciated as im very new to all this.

Sounds like your second hd. try installing ubuntu along side of windows then you will get option of booting into either one

Other option:

boot from the Ubuntu-installation-CD,
go to recovery mode,
enter the command there:

/sbin/grub-install -no-floppy

this will (re-)install grub in the MBR of the first hard disk; it will look for all Operating Systems first.

Ok, i have tried everything that you guys have mentioned and still no joy.
so now im back to just vista and a empty 160GB hard disk waiting for ubuntu.
I have tried to install it again, but during the install options its telling me that there are no other operating systems on the computer, and according to every forum and article i read , ubuntu should recognise vista present. Or am i just missing something very basic here

Can you help with this problem?
