Can't boot start-up disc

Asked by Brian Joyce

[I have an Acer Aspire One (screen size 8.75x5) with Ubuntu. No problems.]
I also have a larger Acer 3100 (screen size 13x8.25). The 3100 is currently loaded with Trisquel but unfortunately the screen output creates a horizontal stretch distortion that is antithetical to my artistic purposes. So I'm trying to install Ubuntu. My install attempts take me to terminal with this message:
SYSLINUX 3.63 Debian-2012-04-16 EBIOS Copyright (C) 1994-2008 H. Peter Anvin
boot:
? ?

Did you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded?

If you are referring to the test option box that is often offered during installation attempts, I didn't get that option. The disc goes right to (immediately) the "SYSLINUX 3.63 Debian-2012-04-16 EBIOS Copyright (C) 1994-2008 H. Peter Anvin
boot:" problem. I suppose I have a defective disc.
