Windows will do that.

You can fix it however, see here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RecoveringUbuntuAfterInstallingWindows

I suggest you to add ubutnu entry in windows boot loader using easybcd. You can set ubuntu as default os using easybcd.

http://www.ubuntugeek.com/use-the-windows-bootloader-to-dual-boot-windows-vista-and-ubuntu.html

http://neosmart.net/EasyBCD/ It is free for non comercial use.

After convicing myself Windows XP is just not worth restoring I've removed it and installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on the whole drive. It seems MS are no longer supporting updates to XP, attempts to reinstall Service Pack 3 just goes into a loop that says it is needed to perform it's own installation! A loop ...need fix ... can't fix, need fix ...
Just not worth it!
