I upgraded from Ub11 10 to 12 04 It won't start

Asked by rpalmer47@gmail.com

I went from Ubuntu 11 10 to Ubuntu 12 04. On restart, It says, "Error no such partition" I can start up this new operating system by putting in a USB flash memory, with another operating system on it and choosing Sda 7 which is where the new operating system is. Then this Ubuntu 12 04 seems to work. A GRUB screen comes up but I can do nothing with it.
How do I get this new Ubuntu 12 04 to boot up?

Then run:

sudo grub-install /dev/sda
sudo update-grub

Should fix it

Assuming /dev/sda is the drive with Ubuntu on. You can check with:

sudo fdisk -l

No It did not work "sudo grub-install/dev/sda7", it says something like command not found. I am on a Terminal screen, is that right?

sudo grub-install /dev/sda

You don't install to the partition and you missed the space between the command and the first slash.... so yes, it will fail

You were right about the space missed, now it says "Found Ubuntu 12 04.1
LTS on /dev/sdc1" I think that sdc1 may be the flash memory that I used to
start it up

Yes, You are correct. With no flash memory plugged into a USB, it starts,
though I think that it says it is sdc1. I do not understand what is
happenning, but thank you very much. Bob Palmer
