Grub rescue

Asked by Gregory Copher

OK, I installed wubi, along with installing ubuntu 12.4 LTS on a separate HD, dual boot.
 I have been using both OS's successfully, for the past week, hoever, I updated the bios on my Mboard, and after rebooting, checking my Bios version in CMOS, Reboot, and got a 'grub rescue' return, on the screen. I checked all of the answers and I have rebooted into live ubuntu from the CD I created. I am attempting to re-install wubi, however, I am a bit uneasy about loosing my Windows install, as well as, why this happened.
 Please Advise!!

Hi ,
you said wubi , so Ubuntu is installed from inside windows and installed as a regular program. Wubi is not a regular installation but a virtual installation for testing proposes only.

Then you said that also have a regular installation of Ubuntu on a separate HDD.

I suggest to boot from a DVD of windows and repair installation to fix MBR . Then you will be able to boot in windows and fix the wubi installation.

Another suggestion might be to use the boot-repair program. Boot from Ubuntu CD / USB and follow instructions from here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair , 2nd option

Thank you

Hi ,
help us with more information . How did you installed Ubuntu ? via Wubi or regular dual-boot ?

Wubi has not a Grub-bootloader , wubi has windows bootloader (this black screen with 2 selections Windows - Ubuntu) .

Grub-bootloader is a purple screen with more of 2 selections . Usually 1. Ubuntu 2. Ubuntu recovery mode 3. Memtest etc (Hah hell of description about Grub :P )

Now , what of above 2 screens you had, before BIOS update ?

If you had the first black screen the probably wubi installed. So follow the first suggestion in #1st post .

If you had the second screen (grub-bootloader) follow the 2nd suggestion in #1st post.

Thank you.

Hi ,
strange problem. Usually grub is a very flexible bootloader and recognize windows immediately .

Try 2 things :

1. Boot in Ubuntu and open a terminal , give this command
+++++++++++++++++++
sudo update-grub
+++++++++++++++++++
post the results back here. Maybe above command fix the error.

2. Same thing with first but mount your windows partition.

Open nautilus file manager and at the left-hand on window you will see a list under Devices. There will be your windows partition.
Boot both "reserved" and partition with windows files.
Then run in terminal
+++++++++++++++++
sudo update-grub
+++++++++++++++++

both methods do the same thing but 2nd maybe will be more effective.

If you still having problem , will try other methods.

Thank you.

Hi, well before I received your fix, I found that Ubuntu and Grub had an
update, I chose the update, then after update, there was a configuration
that said that was older, and if I wanted to keep or cancel. Me being
uneasy that I had lost my Windows drive / partition, I chose to keep it,
then it wanted to restart, Grub showed my Win 7 64 bit Drive, Waaahooo!
 Thank you GEEK GOD!!
 Everything seems perfect now. I have my Linux Drive, Grub for dual boot
AND my Win 7 64 bit! (I am unimpressed with the new windows (vista,7 and
8, pure junk!) I like XP, however, there were some things I have to have
and I have to do the Win 7 64 bit to keep up! Now I am not completely new
to Linux, however, I have checked out Ubuntu (Ver.8) in the past. I figured
it wasn't bad at all. I really like it, but I need to learn more about it.
Why I have waited all this time to get onto it, I do not know. I am fairly
new to code and programming language. I learned the MS stuff in college
(Q-basic and Visual Basic) as I was woring on building a Building
Maintenance Program, of which I have put on the Shelf for a while. I would
like to learn Linux and build the program from Linux code. I dabbled in
Unix, Fortran, and machine code (very little) back in 1997. I have had MS
machines since the 8085, DOS, and those huge dinosaurs. A bit
in Commodore 64 with a character generator. (all of which was experienced
in the Hotel Business, with communications and Data bases, along with
advertising, therefore, I stayed in the Microsoft thing, I guess because I
was uneasy about Linux at the time, I have just sit on the sidelines and
watched it grow, and been a user, and I also repair electronics (Hardware
geek), including cell phones. I have modded, with someone elses code,
following instructions, so now I want to go in head first and learn this
stuff. Sorry for the long winded story, but I am in hopes to find myself
building a few Programs with Linux.

 Thank you so much for all of your time and effort to help me. I greatly
appreciate it very much!

 I pray to the geek God that you have a pleasant day!!
