I lost access to my windows 7 drive (Dual-boot windows 7 & Ubuntu)

Asked by Fahad

I lost access to my windows 7 drive (Dual-boot windows 7 & Ubuntu).

Every time I try to run Windows 7 I get the message: Bootmgr is compressed, CTRL_ALT-DEL to restart.

I could run Bootrec /fixmbr or diskpart or attrib to rebuild my mbr table through DOS command window using my windows 7 recovery CD.

The problem I cannot access drive C: where is my windows 7 or /Dev/sda1.

I get the error message: Cannot open volume for direct access or system cannot find the drive path or specified.

I still can access all my windows folders and files through home folder in Ubuntu.

I don't want to reformat and reinstall windows.

Is there is a way to run the DOS commands within Ubuntu or any other advice to how to fix this issue.

Hi ,
if you boot from window's dvd and try the automatic repair option (no DOS commands) what is the error message ?
Thank you.

What is the output of the command??? Simply saying "It didn't work" tells us nothing.....

When I boot from the windows dvd and try to the repair option, there is no OS listed in the recovery windows and when I click 1st option in the recovery menu for window to auto recovery, I get the same massage "missing bootmgror cannot accesse the windows C: drive.

I just order and use spotmau powersuite Golden 2012 ($80) to use there bootup CD and use their 3 utilties MBR recovery, boot file recovery, and boot sector recovery, but again with no luck and getting the same error massage "Cannot open volume for direct access or system cannot find the drive path". I contact their Tech support and waiting for their answer.

The problem and the astonishing issue for me as I inducated above, I could access all my folder and Documents (my entire C: Windows 7) from within Ubuntu in the home folder or when using Disk utility is listed under Device /dev/sda1 and Mounted at /Media/seagate-500GB. This was my original question or concern, if there is a code or utility to run or use within ubuntu to fixmbr.

Another question is there is a way to just remove Ubuntu completely without effecting or reformating my hard disk. I did use my live ub CD to do so, but the only two options that I have is to reinstall Ubuntu or to remove both OS and reinstall.

Again, any help or advice, I truly apprecated.

Hi ,
there is no need to pay 80$ for utilities when free and strong tools are out there.
I suggest to use testdisk utility and try to restore your windows installation.

Though its a very old thread, but if anyone encountered such kinds of issues, run DISM and SFC scan and update your hard disk driver. To know more details, can check out this article https://silicophilic.com/system-cannot-find-the-path-specified/

Can you help with this problem?
