Sometimes GRUB 3.6.32-41 shuts down computer

Asked by Hans

I am trying to start UBUNTU with GRUB 3.6.32-41 and "sometimes" as UBUNTU is loading the computer goes off. I have used a previous version of GRUB to start the computer and that usually works. Today I updated the Linux kernel but I do not know for sure that that is what is causing the shutdown before UBUNTU finishes loading as the third time I tried the GRUB 3.6.32-41 loader UBUNTU started normally.

Sorry, it is not clear what if you are talking about grub (version numbers around 1.99) or the kernel (versions around 3.6).
When does the system reboot?

I'm sorry. GRUB 1.98-1ubuntu13 and kernel is 2.6.32-41. Ubuntu is 10.04 LTS . The computer is a DIY dual core 64 bit machine.
Now I have booted up three times in a row with no problems. I realize that something that works is not easy to troubleshoot but it does concern me since if this continued it would be impossible to use Ubuntu.

Usually you can start the old kernel versions from the grub menu. It should come up when the boot was incomplete on the next start automatically, If it does not, hold down Shift while booting. Then select an older kernel from the menu.
