Was upgrading ubuntu and suddenly system got restarted

Asked by Sumit

Sir,

I was upgrading my ubuntu 10.10 to 11.04. The upgrade was almost over and it was at the stage of installing the downloaded files. But then my home power supply went off and I had to shut down my system.

But after that, now when I am trying to switch to ubuntu during booting , it shows an error..

init: hostname main process (360) terminated with status 1

someone please help me with this. I do not want a fresh installation since I had lots of important data in that.

Thanking you

The backups you made will protect your data. If you hold SHIFT at boot, select recovery mode then select root and run:

 fuser -vki /var/lib/dpkg/lock; dpkg --configure -a; apt-get -f install

Thank you for the reply sir.

But I have ubuntu installed on another partition and it shows both the operating systems during boot. When I enter into ubuntu it shows one normal mode and another recovery mode. When I press enter at recovery mode, it shows few lines of information on recovery but later no action.

So am I supposed to hold the shift after pressing enter into ubuntu at dual boot screen? Will it interfere my os on other partition?

Thanking You.
