cannot boot ubuntu from hard drive

Asked by Steven Reani

Hi Folks,

Love Ubuntu, but Windows is a pest. It absolutely will not allow itself to be removed or allow Ubuntu to boot up the computer from Hard Drive. I performed the installation process multiple times, choosing the option to replace all operating systems with Ubuntu only. The Ubuntu interface shows the whole installation process, which it appears to be performing, all the way to completion. It finally asks me to continue operating from USB or restart from HD. I choose restart, but as soon as the computer restarts, Windows is still there perfectly functional with it's beloved viruses too and taking control again. It's a difficult process to stop it and get back to being able to even reboot from USB with Ubuntu. I've already requested help before but without a successful resolution. I'm sorry to need your help for this but technical issues are really not my thing. I'm counting on you, Ubuntu community, to save me from the jaws of microsoft.

Thank you

It's 11.10 that I'm trying to install. I assume it's the latest version.

Did you install using Wui or did you boot to the install CD and select to use the full available disk space?

I downloaded Ubuntu 11.10 onto USB first. Then tried to load onto the HD. I selected the option to replace microsoft OS altogether.

The computer did get infected by the XP virus before I tried downloading Ubuntu. Do you think that might be interfering? Hopefully there's a way around that.

I tried downloading boot repair from the link you provided but it doesn't give me a choice of where to save the file. It automatically tries to download to the USB. Now that it filled up all the space on the US

.....Now that it filled up all the space on the USB, and failed to complete the installation, it won't even allow me to begin the download again until I clear space on the USB. Only problem is I don't know how to access the USB. There is no icon on desktop or launchpad to access it.

Is there any way to bypass downloading boot repair onto USB?

And once boot repair is successfully installed on the HD, will it automatically start running Ubuntu, or at least give me the choice to complete the original action to replace microsoft?

Can you help with this problem?
