Problema grub ubuntu 12

Ho installato Ubuntu 12 in dualboot con Windows 7 con una pennina usb.
Dopo l'installazione però non mi parte il grub, se non quando la pennina usb è inserita. Altrimenti il sistema parte direttamente con windows 7 senza chiedere nulla.
Altro problema legato: se io volessi far partire una live con la pennina usb questo mi è impossibile perchè invece mi parte direttamente il grub.
Quanche idea?

GRUB does not install onto your hard drive unless you are dual booting Ubuntu on that drive. Since you are installing on a USB, GRUB is installing onto your USB drive. Since your USB Drive is the only device that has Ubuntu on it, GRUB does not automatically. If you want it to show the GRUB menu on the USB Drive during the boot cycle, press SHIFT as soon as the BIOS/UEFI boots from the USB.
