Booting problem: gave up waiting for root device

Asked by Athanasius

'm new to ubuntu, and after installing it on my labtop (12.0.4) I though why not also install it on my desktop (64bit - gigabyte amd radeon 6950), via tha double boot windows/ubuntu system. After restarting and trying to boot ubuntu, I just got the following screen:

Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems: -Boot args (cat/proc/cmdline) -Checkrootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?) - Check root= (did the system wait for the right device?) - Missing modules (cat /proc/modulesl ls /dev) Alert! /dev/disk/by-uuid/CAD489ADD4899BF7 does not exist. Dropping to a shell!

Since I'm new to this, from the basic searching I did via forums, I didn't find a clear response on how to fix it, and there was a lot of lingo which I was unfamiliar with.

And have no idea what to do from here. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Please try to reinstall Grub:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2/Installing#Reinstall_from_the_LiveCD

It usually fix the issue.

I'm sorry but I still have a problem understanding what that article is asking me to do. I installed ubuntu via wubi, and therefore dont really know what the LiveCD terminal is, what MBR is, and what GRUB 2 is or how to reinstall it for that matter.

Can you help with this problem?
