grub can't find boot partition after 12.04 upgrade

Asked by Joshua Rolock

Just applied the 12.04 LTS upgrade. When it rebooted, the grub screen gave a choice of 'ubuntu, with Linux 3.2.0-24-gereric' & 'ubuntu, with Linux 3.2.0-24-gereric (recovery mode)'. Choosing either one results in 'error: no such partition'.

Everything was working fine prior to the upgrade which was applied from the update manager.

Boot to liveCD and fsck the partition. You may need to chroot to the installed OS using the same CD and run:

sudo update-grub
