grub2 error DMI Pool Data - Error No Such Device: how to reinstall grub2

Asked by michael indice

I can boot, no problem, from an Ubuntu boot USB stick, but not the hard drive I've been using for years.
I can even get the GRUB menu to boot into the hard drive installation ("... ... ... on /dev/sda1").

Otherwise, without the boot USB stick:
"
Verifying DMI pool data. . . . . . .
error: no such device: xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx
grub rescue>
"

This problem arose when using Startup Disk Creator in 12.04 to actually make the aforementioned USB Boot Disk.
FYI.

I've read that clearing out the CMOS by removing the lithium battery will help.
Is this really it?
Really?
Will too many memory sticks and SD cards do this over time?

thanks, indi

If you can boot to USB, you can use this link:

thanks, [actionparsnip]. The computer in question was not internet-enabled at the time, so I followed the helpful links to [madjr]'s comment and downloaded:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair

this automatically fixed the GRUB bootloader perfectly.

THANK YOU EVERYONE...
