frequency out of range 11.10

Asked by Bullwinkle

I have been using 11.10 for 6 months no problems on HP pc m779y dual core intel p965 1066 fsbus 4g ram nvidia geforce 7600gt dual hard drives. vista on one, 11.10 on other. just replaced one ubuntu drive with new drive. now after install 11.10 on new drive, when install is complete and I reboot I get "frequency out of range". I have tried f1, shift, space bar during boot and all I can get to is frequency message, no script. if I boot from usb I can mount new drive but it is not running pc and I can use terminal but it does not change settings, sudo nano /ect/default/grub to change but cannot change graphics mode to 1024x768 from 800x600. any help would be great

Try the boot option:

nouveau.blacklist=1

so far, I am not able to get past "frequency out of range" message. when I use live usb in terminal and use sudo nano /ect/default/grub, I can see display setting and change it to 1024x768 but terminal will not accept change or blacklist. still trying but no luck

would a hardware upgrade, new monitor, solve this issue?

when I run gksu gedit /etc/default/grub and I change text line to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT+"nouveau.blacklist=1 quiet splash" and save it, when I try to $ sudo update-grub2 I get "bad cmd". In terminal cursor looks like this. ubuntu@ubuntu $ sudo update-grub2, am I missing something because all I get is bad command, so no update.

Run:

sudo apt-get install gtk2-engines-pixbuf

Will suppress the pixmap warnings.

Thanks Actionparsnip!! I had a hell of a time with this. What solved the monitor problem was I changed hardware, had an old gateway le500 crt setting around and when I hooked it up presto I could see my gui. This is after fighting for two days with my Mag crt. So then I followed your suggestion about "nouveau.blacklist=1" and in thesame grub text window I changed the line from 800x480 to 1024x768. Now I am using toshiba LED and, knock on wood, all is well. also did your suggested "sudo apt-get install gtk2-engines-pixbuf" and that ended warnings.

Great help, thanks again

Yeah, you didn't need to do all that. You didn't enter the grub2 line correctly. It merely needs to be

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet nouveau.blacklist=1"

then save and reconfigure grub2:

 sudo update-grub

then reboot and your error messages should be gone.

Changing the line for the GFXMODE is probably not necessary and is optional:

GRUB_GFXMODE=1024x768

Ooops, that's what I did in Precise. In Oneiric I used the old solution:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet i915.modeset=0"

Still no luck with monitor problem. Have installed 12.04 precise and only way I can get monitor to show gui is to connect 2 monitors to card, 2 dvi outputs on card. Have been trying small changes to /etc/default/grub in CMD line as suggested. Still need more help

Thanks

two more thoughts, when I boot after the changes to grub all seems ok for several hot boots. But after the pc sits overnight and I boot for the first time for the day is when I have the frequency out of range error and have to connect old crt. Also 12.04 is a fresh install from a usb stick, not a update manager from 11.10.

sorry but another thought. Since installing 12.04 precise 2 error reports have been automatically generated by the OS and sent off to developers as indicated by error message.

after fighting with this for several weeks, it seems I had several bad downloads of 12.04precise as I downloaded last night fresh vesion of 12.04 and all is well with no changes to grub. I did notice that some changes have been made to the grub by the developers. I do not know if it was my IP, or the usb stick or the mirror but it WORKS!!!!
