Cannot Boot Ubuntu without nolapic

Asked by Emerson Hsieh

After hanging around in the Ubuntu site, I decided to install Ubuntu 11.10.

I booted from the Ubuntu cd and chose try Ubuntu. Then it shows a flashing line and nothing happens. (The CD drive stops spinning)

Next I applied the nolapic parameters to the bootoptions and it booted and installed. But after I booted Ubuntu the computer kept hanging at the purple screen. I applied the nolapic parameters and this time Ubuntu booted but froze after I login. Then I rebooted with the nolapic parameters again and this time the computer had no internet. Last I tried booting without any parameters. Same purple screen.

Summary: boot with nolapic, Installation complete, first boot, purple screen, reboot with nolapic, login, freezes, reboot with nolapic, login, didn't freeze, no internet, reboot with no parameters, same purple screen

Did anyone had this problem? I searched on Google for a long time and no one got the same issue as me. And all of these didn't happen when I installed Ubuntu 10.04 a long time ago.

I've heard that Ubuntu dropped support of apic starting from 10.04, but I don't really know what that means.

Specs: ASUS F81S series, Windows 7 Dual boot, 4GB RAM, ATI Radeon 4570 graphics card, Atheros AR928X internet card, Intel Duo P8700 CPU

Um, ASUS Live Update said that I don't need to update anything(Including BIOS).

um, i don't know that for sure do I, so it's a reasonable question. Drop the "um" crap too please, it conveys attitude and contributes nothing constructive.

I suggest you report a bug. Have you tried Precise, the new kernel may help.

Sorry for the "Um" thing. I was getting used to it.

I followed the steps in http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1662577&page=3
and Ubuntu 12.04 installed without nolapic! Seems like all ASUS computers have this problem.

Thanks!
