Cannot Install GRUB2

Asked by LinuxNewbie

Hi,
Can you help me please? I have been running my self ragged trying to do a fresh install of xubuntu 11.10 on a computer. I keep getting this error message when I try to mount: "mount: can't find /dev/sda1 in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab" using this code: 'sudo mount /dev/sda1/mnt'. I have tried everything I can by searching the ubuntu site and by reading forums?

I am trying to do a complete installation onto a 40G PATA drive. The computer has 2 Gb of RAM and the CPU is 2000MHz (Its kind of an older one, but it is working). I have no other software on the HDD, its new.

When I do sudo fdish -l , this is what I get (less the start and end info)

Boot Device Id System
/dev/sda1 83 Linux
/dev/sda2 5 Extended
/dev/sda5 82 Linus swap/Solaris

Please help me I have been trying for a while and now I'm just getting frustrated. I really want Linux/Ubuntu to work for me I think its amazing (from the read and the reviews). But no one said it would be so difficult to install.
Thanks.

That's more power than any of my systems. Its more than enough needed for Ubuntu and even Windows.

Will get the boot loader installed to the drive for you. You shouldn't be using raw device names in fstab, you should use UUIDs.

Can you help with this problem?
