After installing ubuntu alongside xp I get error:no such device: xx...xx <>grub rescue>

Asked by Kevin Galligan

I installed ubuntu alongside windows xp from a cd. When it had finished it asked to be restarted but failed to boot with the following error;
error: no such device: 58f766f6-7841-4b51-9a27-61b9027993be
grub rescue>
XP is on drive c: and ubuntu is on drive d:
I have set both disks to auto in the Bios but neither OS will boot.
It seems to want to read the floppy drive.

I couldn't follow the instructions on the video because I could not see how she opened various options. I have worked on Unix in the past but I am new to Ubuntu. I downloaded a Grub repair program and ran that without success. I used that to repair my MBR and after using a partioning tool I discovered that the wrong partition was active. I made the correct partition active and now I can boot Windows so I am back to where I started. It looks to me as if there is something wrong with the current Ubuntu installation application.
Thanks for your help anyway
