after installing 11.10 windows will not boot

Is your ubuntu fully updated?

Do you have a Windows recovery CD ? Firstly, you will need to reinstall volume Windows boot loader. If it doesn't work, we will have to have a look at MBR.

I boot from a Dell Laptop XP Home Addition in to recovery mode using the R option. The windows volume is intact and data is secure. I am at a loss what to do next without damaging both Operating Systems. Ubuntu works and I have a lot of time invested in this OS now, I can not afford to lose either one. What do I do next?

Run:

fixboot
fixmbr

Then reboot and XP will load, you can then boot to the Ubuntu CD and reinstate Grub with this link:

You should also make a backup of your data so that if anything goes wrong at any time then you can easily reinstate the OS and data.

Did as instructed, windows says disk is damaged and will not boot. Now both OS's are non-operational.

Tried Nicky's video and was able to restore Grub. Windows data is still intact. But back to where I started, only Ubuntu is operational from Grub boot.

One question is bothering me though, why did Ubuntu claim that I can run both side by side and this doesn't work. You would think after this many years a simple install of Ubuntu next to a Windows XP Pro would work perfectly? My Window XP Pro was just a plain simple install.....

The issue is Windows installations are not standard, and are modified by manufacturer. There is not a standard way to install Ubuntu alongside Windows. The most common cases are checked, but not all cases.
For example, some PCs come with four primary partitions, which prevent installation of any second OS.
If disk is damaged, you can't install anything on it, so I'm surprised you have succeeded to install Ubuntu on it. Could you report exact error message ?

It can and does run side by side, watch any youtube video mentioning dual booting windows and ubuntu, it's all there. Just because your setup is misconfigured doesn't mean it cannot be done. How ignorant does that make you look. Try booting to the Ubuntu liveCD and instate Grub2 there, should be ok

If I use the Windows restore is still shows valid data on the Windows partitions.
