Incomplete ubuntu start-up

Why did my pc get stuck on the reddish screen just before the ubuntu log-in and didn't move until a hard re-boot?

The reddish color on the screen is part of the normal boot-up. The log-in screen follows that. However, on that "problem" day, the log-in never came up and I couldn't elicit a reaction from the system no matter what I tried. I finally initiated a hard reboot. The following and all boot-ups since have been normal.

As soon as you see reddish screen, could you press <ESC> key, and report last messages.
