Dual-boot Ubuntu 11.10/Win Xp w/Grub 2. XP won't boot.

Asked by Jack Shepherd

I've set up Windows XP on one disk & Ubuntu on another. I use Grub to dual-boot, but now I cannot boot XP. I use Grub 2 & Ubuntu 11.10. When I choose XP in Grub, I get the start-up screen but it stops there & reboots again. I've tried booting XP in safe mode but the same thing happens. Using the Win CD to repair the XP set up doesn't work either since it fails to even find the XP operating system. Any suggestion to help would be appreciated.

your xp boot sector is corrupted. go to the microshaft support site and download a recovery disk. look for vista recovery disk, as it works with xp as well. burn it onto a cd and boot off the cd to repair the boot sector. instructions on what to do are on the microshaft site.

To see how to restore the Ubuntu/XP/Vista/7 bootloader, go on this site
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1014708
Try first to repair the Windows boot loader and don't touch MBR.
If it fails, you will have to reinstall Windows MBR and after to reinstall Ubuntu MBR ( https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2#Reinstalling_GRUB2 )
If you want to avoid such issue, next time, set Windows disk as second disk during installation of Ubuntu. In this configuration, the Windows disk will be untouched, and Ubuntu bootloader will make what is needed to make Windows bootable.
