update-grub fails,why?

Trying to update-grub but it fails with the following response
/usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for / (is /dev mounted?).

I have replied yes but still loading

If you are trying to update the grub2 config files on a hard drive but have booted off the LiveCD then you will need to chroot into the filesystem before you can run update grub.

What drive is your Ubuntu installed on, and is it currently bootable? If it's bootable then just boot off it and run update-grub
