Does grub really need to depend on libfreetype6?

Asked by agent 8131

The recent security update for libfreetype6 caused me to wonder what libfreetype6 was even doing on my servers which have no need for it. I was surprised to learn that the only package requiring it was grub-common which is a dependency for grub. All of my servers use grub (legacy) not grub2 and I don't believe grub legacy can even use fonts. So it seems that the correct place for that dependency would be in the grub-pc package. But I wanted to ask before filing a bug report just in case I was missing something. Thank you.

freetype is not a direct dependency of any grub package, as far as I can see.

http://packages.ubuntu.com/oneiric/grub
http://packages.ubuntu.com/precise/grub
http://packages.ubuntu.com/maverick/grub
http://packages.ubuntu.com/natty/grub
http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/grub

It might however be being pulled in via a "suggests" dependency on debconf, which pulls in gtk and qt.

If you're going to take the time to answer my question please make sure you read it completely. I clearly stated that grub depends on grub-common which depends on libfreetype6.
