removing old packages from boot and grub

Asked by plodEscortmk2

I have done it in the past but ages ago so i have forgotten. I am a noob when it comes to Linux so please be very specific if and when you reply.

I want to remove the older packages listed in the grub dual boot screen. One to make the grub screen neater and two to recover disc space in boot so that I can update.

Please direct me to a "How to"

You probably want to remove old kernels. If that is a case then go to the synaptic and in search box type linux-image.You will see all your installed kernels.Delete old ones (they have lower kernel number) and delete those headers too. After that

sudo update-grub

Thank you for the feedback chaps.

I read through and tried every one, but unfortunately some assumed too much detail. I am trying to learn linux having been a long time windows user, but haven't got many tricks up my sleeve yet.

Whenever I try and read documentation I have the same problem. actionparsnip asked me to give him the output of lsb_release -a; ........ (thanks for the assist but I couldn't reach out to the helping hand mate. :-)) Not your fault just my lack of competence.

I typed that into everywhere I could find and it kept coming back with errors and/or nothing at all. My point is How? where? these are things that a noob needs to know.

I support some windows packages (that my company has developed) remotely and I have users who whilst they can turn the machine on and do what they have been shown to do. Exploring further than that is a new language. I have to lead them through it step by step. "Click here and this window appears. If it doesn't say this... do this. Click OK". Detailed and clear. I have built up quite a library of plodgrams as I call them. I have chaps who have never done more than click start/mycomputer and choose a word document doing all sorts with drive names and start up programmes, and advanced windows setup all from "how to"s.

I have this discussion at the LUG meetings I am able to make (which is few due to my job) as the answers I get to everything assume a level of competence that I just have not developed yet. As I said earlier the documentation is like this too.

Please don't think this is a rant either I have been blown away by the support from fellow linux users and it is heart-warming that folks take time out of their day to help just to see a new linux user alongside them.

Where we need to focus is the details. For instance a person will not find it insulting if you assume he doesn't know how to open a terminal window. Moreover how does one then navigate to the file destination?, folder?, drive? Buggered if I know and I cant find anywhere that tells me that. And yes I don't know how to open a terminal window. I can find out though by reading the documentation. "Just open a terminal window and type....." it says. Notice the problem here?

Anyway. I really love linux, I really love the sense of community that it engenders and I am determined to improve. Maybe I should make it my retirement target to rewrite documents into "Noob". The language of the learner. :-)

Thanks for all the support chaps and chapesses; I will persevere. Actionparsnip thanks to you too man, I wasn't having a go at you just making a point. Thanks for stepping up for me, even though I could not follow. You tried and that is great.

have fun
