Grub rescue appeared after install

Asked by Richard Smith

I installed version 10.04 onto a blank hard disk on a desktop pc.
I chose to let the installer format the disk.
The installation went ok, but on the first re-boot I got the message grub rescue.
Why did this happen and where do I go from here?

Sometimes Ubiquity (Ubuntu installer) fails to configure rightly Grub2 (the boot loader).
You have first to reinstall Grub2 from Ubuntu medium. It usually fix the issue: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2#Reinstalling_GRUB2 .
If you need more help, please provide partition table: https://answers.launchpad.net/grub/+faqs

I have given up trying to install Ubuntu on the grounds
that my hardware is just not up to the job.
