installed ubuntu 11.10 but it doesn't run

Asked by Traviss Locke

I did the MD5 test on the iso and it was fine. I burnt a cd at the slowest speed.
The installation completed successfully but when the computer rebooted it showed a purple screen for a few seconds then went blank and stays that way.
I have no other OS installed.
Before choosing "install Ubuntu" i selected all the options in the"F6" menu. I think most of those options are hard drive related settings. Is it possible I need one of those on?
I'm running off the cd now and all seems ok.

The F6 options menu only changes things for the current boot, it doesn't change how Ubuntu is installed. If you need to disable APIC to get the CD to boot for example, you'll have to change some boot parameters on the installed Ubuntu also.

Do you actually need to change any options to get the machine to boot? Which ones. They are not all to do with hard drive settings. ACPI for example is "Advanced Configuration Power Interface" while APIC is "Advanced programmable Interface Controller".

I was having trouble just booting from the CD and found that changing the settings enabled me to do it.

I narrowed it down to selecting only the "nomdraid" option and the "nomodesetup". Again I get as far as completing the installation but Ubuntu doesn't load after restart.

You can enable these options during boot of the installed system, then assuming that makes it boot successfully, you can edit the installed system's configuration so they are always used. See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132.
