[UEFI] Freshly installed Ubuntu 11.04 does not boot on Thinkpad X121e - "No operation system found"

Asked by florian k.

I recently tried to install Ubuntu (11.04 x64) on a brand new Thinkpad X121e. During the installation process, no errors occurred. But the notepad refused to boot the new installation. The harddisk is registered as a booting device in the BIOS setup and booting live systems from USB devices (created by UNetbootin) works perfectly.
I tried to to the installation again, but the same problem occurred again.

Is it only Ubuntu or is it a dual boot?

It's just because you did not install the bootloader on the right location.
You will have to boot again from USB and re-install the grub.

I'll get back with more info.

I already tried a reinstallation of GRUB. It did not work.
The problem described does not only occur with Ubuntu. I installed Fedora and discovered exactly the same problem: Booting from stick worked fine but the installed system will not boot.

If you boot to USB you can then boot the first drive from there and the OS should load. You can then run:

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get -y upgrade; sudo apt-get -y dist-upgrade; sudo update-grub

Then reboot to test

Forst and foremost - without tweaking BIOS you will fail to boot it from a stick. UEFI needs to be disables. .....

Second - even if the installation on 11.04 is successfull, there is a chance you will not be able to boot from the hard drive. Symptoms: Error message stating that there is "No operating system". This was however discussed in other posts.

Can you help with this problem?
