Boot into Virtualbox vdi directly from GRUB menu -- boot virtual OS

Asked by svens

Hey guys,

I'm trying to find a possibility to add a vdi image to grub's menu.lst so I can
boot into a virtual OS created in Virtualbox.

The main thing is to skip almost all the resources that Ubuntu will require to run properly
as a normal disk OS, and use just a custom kernel with the requires libraries/modules
to boot directly into a vdi installed OS.

Thanks in advance for any recommendation.

Do you use Grub 1 or 2 ?

I don't know how act Xen. For what I read and understand, Xen act more like a hypervisor and VirtualBox like a full virtualization. Xen is by itself a small OS, and can be loaded by Grub directly. VirtualBox rely fully on host OS - Linux kernel - which must be loaded first, which will launch after VirtualBox and then this last one will load VM. What you could do is to add in start menu a shell script which launch VM through VirtualBox.

It's grub 2 as Ubuntu 11.04 uses now.
I guess I'll just stay on xen. I've been researching and what I want to do
is not likely possible.

Thanks delance.
