Am trying to insall 11.04 64 along side Win7, but it never gives me the choice screen between the two. I can't run Ubuntu

Asked by Greg Ghosh

I had 11.04 32 bit, but then realized I have a 64 bit machine, so I am trying to install 64 bit. It generally goes thru the install, but I do not have access to Ubu. The install seems different that the previous. Before I had access to the files in Win7 where I uninstalled. Now it is creating a hidden partition and the only way to delete is thru computer management and I have to delete paritions and recombine; have have done this 10+ times. The operating system choice screen does not pop up. Any help would be appreciated. I would really like to minimize if not eliminate my Win7 use. Thanks.

"The operating system choice screen does not pop up."
I think you are referring to the boot loader screen. I'm not certain, but it seems that the boot loader was not installed correctly.

When I installed Ubuntu 10.04 along side Windows XP, I came to a setup screen for setting up the partitions. Shortly after that, there was another screen that had an Advanced button. (Sorry, I can't remember the name of that screen.) Anyway, when I clicked on the Advanced button, it brought up a smaller window wanting to know where to install the boot loader.

The boot loader needs to be installed on the harddrive device, but not in a partition. So on my SCSI harddrive, I installed to dev/sda, which is the entire harddrive, and not to a partition which would be dev/sda1, dev/sda2, etc.

Ubuntu 10.04 uses the grub boot loader so I'm guessing that 11.04 does as well.

Windows should be installed first. Windows will install it's own boot loader. Then install Ubuntu. Ubuntu will install the grub boot loader which will take control of booting any bootable partition on the harddisk, including Windows.

Hope this helps.

Please provide partition table, so we will have an idea of current situation: https://answers.launchpad.net/grub/+faq/1678
Did you used Wubi or did you installed alongside Windows ?

Can you help with this problem?
