Windows/Ubuntu dual - Receive "GNU GRUB version 1.99~ rcl-13 ubuntu 3" instead of desktop.

Asked by Benjamin J. Wakefield

HP Pavilion dv7 notebook; Windows 7 OS; SP1; Intel i5 CPU M 520 @ 240 GHz; 8 GB Ram. This is a dual boot notebook. One day I can move from one OS to the other, then the next day I can only get into Windows OS. There have been no system changes. When Ubuntu is selected, I receive "GNU GRUB version 1.99~ rcl-13; Minimal BASH-Like line editing is supported," etc. rather than the Ubuntu desktop. I do not know what to input to permit access to desktop. Whatever advise you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

How did you install Ubuntu?

If you installed Ubuntu alongside Windows: did problem appear first time you log in and out of Windows, after Ubuntu installation.

Windows OS was pre-installed; Ubuntu was installed over a year ago online. I have on many occasions logged into Windows and then rebooted and logged into Ubuntu. This problem has never previously occurred.

My apologies. I didn't realize I could respond directly to your post.
Instead I posted on the page itself as additional comment. Anyway, this
is what I posted:

"Windows OS was pre-installed; Ubuntu was installed over a year ago

and logged into Ubuntu. This problem has never previously occurred."

Hope this helps.
Thank you.

Could you run following procedure:
--------------------------------------------------
There is a standard script provided to analyse boot configuration. Could you download script at:

   http://sourceforge.net/projects/bootinfoscript/

Then in a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) run command:

    sudo bash [path/to/the/download_folder]/boot_info_script.sh

This will produce a file named: RESULTS.txt. Paste content of this file in http://paste.ubuntu.com/ and provide in this thread the link to Web page. Please don't post file directly in thread, else it will make thread difficult to read.

My apologies Launchpad Janitor. I attempted to apply the fix via the script that was sent to me, but I guess my original post was not clear enough. I cannot access my Ubuntu drive. I only get the "GNU GRUB" input prompt; therefore, I cannot get to any of the software in Ubuntu, nor the internet. (BTW, I also tried running the script on my desktop computer, but was never able to successfully complete the task.) I'm not too sure where to go from here. Should I wipe the drive on my laptop and reinstall from your website again (I'll lose work already completed, but if that can't be helped, so be it.)? Thank you for bringing this back to my frontal lobe.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/bootinfoscript/ is not a fix, but a diagnostic tool.
And Launchpad Janitor is a software bot which remove old messages.
To fix issue, you could try: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2#Copy_LiveCD_Files

Dear delance:

Thank you for your response. The only problem is that I cannot run any of your proposed scripts as I have no access to the Linux drive. These scripts do not work in the Windows7 OS.

Best.

Scripts must be launched from a Live session of Ubuntu. See explanation in links.
