update-grub cannot stat 'aufs'

Trying to install Ubuntu 11.04. Encountered installation error msg:

/dev/disk/by-uuid/fdxxx does not exist

edited grub to uncomment

GRUB_DISABLE_LINUX

tried to update-grub afterwards (using sudo su to get to root), get this error msg:

root@ubuntu:~# update-grub
/usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot stat `aufs'.
