I get a signal out of range on the initial boot of 11.04

I recently upgraded 10.10 to 11.04. I was running a dual boot set-up with Windows XP. The initial boot selection screen was showing fine on 10.10 but when I upgraded to 11.04 I get a signal out of range on my monitor (an LG LCD monitor about 5 years old). If I don't do anything, it will boot into 11.04. If I hit "End" then "Enter" , it will boot into Windows. What can I do to get the initial boot selection screen to show properly? Thank you.
