New dual boot install, no boot option menu...goes straight into ubuntu log in.

Asked by Suzanna Crossman

I just installed 11.04 64bit side by side with Windows 7 Home prem 64 bit. Install went fine. system seems to be running fine, EXCEPT I do not get a boot option menu. (I'm getting it on my old, old PC which I just resurrected with 11.04 but no windows). When the computer starts up I get the normal flash screen with the boot menu or setup option keys, then I get a bouncing box that says "frequency out of range". After that I get the login for ubuntu. I did not change my partitions from what was recommended and the install was quick...too quick to have repartitioned and wiped windows (I've reformatted this particular PC more than anyone should have to in their life!)

I'm assuming the monitor isn't up to Unity specs (although I've yet to find the specs anywhere...) but it is set for Ubuntu Classic on the login.

Is there a simple readjustment to my monitor or driver or doI need to uninstall and reinstall? If that is the case...since what I am needing to do is network my 3 home delvices and since the old one is ubuntu only , the existing windows networking is proving troublesome. Do I need to install ubuntu server on the primary desktop?

I believe you have the same problem reported by myself and others: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+question/155140 and bug report 78241https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+bug/7824199 . In my case, the bootloader (grub2 menu) was active, it just did not display. What worked for me and others is to open a terminal, go and edit the file /etc/default/grub (as superuser), uncomment the line "#GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480" (remove the "#" from the front of the line and save the change. Run "sudo update-grub", and reboot. The bootloader should now display.Let me know if that works for you.

In the same file (/etc/default/grub), make sure that the line "GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0" is commented out: "#GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0", execute "sudo update-grub", and reboot along withe the other change mentioned above.

Thank you! I couldn't get terminal to work for me (having one of those days) but found the information on Start Up Manager which allowed me to make changes to menu display time and default OS so at least I can get to windows again. I still need to make changes to the menu text...but first I need to figure out my terminal issues...one small step at a time.

oops and the resolution size....Iit didn't have my native 1440x900 so I went the next one down. Unfortunately some of the other options weren;t available but I'm still having driver issues!
