no video displayed in grub

Asked by tjnpai

I have a AMD athlon-64 Dell PC with Vista OS. Ubuntu was installed in last July, and was working fine. On 05 May 2011 upgraded ubuntu to version 11 (natty nahrwal). After completion of download and installation, the grub screen is not displayed (Error message " Cannot display this video mode optimum resolution is 1440x900 60hz " is displayed by the Dell monitor. However the computer boots directly into ubuntu. After completion of booting the system works fine. Tried to change the settings in /etc/default/grub; (tried uncommenting the line GRUB_TERMINAL=console in root mode; system would not let me write back the changes)

Please help solve the problem

What model is the system. Saying it is a Dell is not sufficient. Dell make hundreds of different models of system.

Thanks

I have a AMD athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4000+ with 2 GB of RAM, 160GB
seagate Barracuda hard disk, DVD writer & 19 inch wide LCD monitor. In the
hard disk C,D & E are NTFS partitions and ubuntu is installed in ext4
partition of 50 GB.
My problem is that I was not able to edit a line in the file
/etc/default/grub, pertaining to the console. Error messages were that the
file is in read-only mode and I am (even though being in su root mode) not
the owner of the file. However I have been able to edit the file with the
command sudo gedit /etc/default/grub. After un-commenting the line
pertaining to console and updating grub with update-grub the problem is
solved.

Is there any other way the problem could have been solved? Please let me
know.

Thanks.

You need to save after modifying /etc/default/grub file.
