boot problem

Asked by wclarowe

I recently posted question 156352. After following instructions received I now get a boot menu and can successfully boot to the Ubuntu 10.10 installation on sdc, the menu does not show the correct kernel for the Ubuntu 11.04 installation on sdb, and cannot boot the Ubuntu 10.10 on sda1. Boot menu shows old kernel information.

With several hard disks, bios will always boot to the hard disk set as master and not to the ones set to slave.
The problem is that sometimes when people add hard disks, they seldom changed the jumpers to set the additional disks as master or slave and the bios can sometimes arbitrarily set any one as master. Note the master is usually sda and the slaves as sdb and sdc.

Now please check if the jumpers for all the disks are set properly - Warning, it may not boot if reset as the bios will boot to the new recognized master.

I would recommend you boot up the 11.04 and set that up to sda. When booted up, even at older kernel, just
"sudo grub-install /dev/sda" and it should include the latest kernel in the grub menu and also do
"sudo grub-install /dev/sdb"
"sudo grub-install /dev/sdc"

Can you help with this problem?
