No Grub2 Display startup or shut down.

Asked by Thesavards

When I was running 10.10 I could see the grub menu at startup and shutdown. I even tried the live cd 11.04 can't remeber which beta it was that ran fine could see everything. Upgraded to 11.04 now I can't see the Grub2 Menu at startup or shutdown get the "Cannot Display this Video Mode" garbage. I am pretty sure it is a scan rate what file do I need to modify to see the grub menu again. It is in fact there I just cannot see it. I know because I counted in my head the entries to run Windows which works. I think it might be the mhz setting but what file do I need to modify for startup and shut down? Thanks in advance for any help. It is annoying but I can still use both operating systems.

I tried the advice of delance but it didn't work for me. I'll repost a different question.

Ubuntu runs once it automatically selects itself from the grub menu because I can't see the menu now in Natty 11.04. It shows just fine when I am running it but at the startup and shutdown I get the message "cannot display this video mode". This never happened in 10.10. What file does Ubuntu use to set the screen resolution and scan rate of the monitor for startup and shutdown? The monitor is a Dell 17" LCD and the video is Nvidia ge 450.

You are the second one this week.

The other guy used startup-manager, which is a GUI to edit Grub configuration. It's more user friendly.

Thank you for trying to help. I need to be more specific of the issue I
am having. I tried as you had posted but it didn't help at all. Thank
you though for the effort. When I was using Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick
Meerkat the usual Grub2 Menu would be showing. With 11.04 it apparently
must have a setting for boot and shutdown that either uses a very weird
display setting or MHZ compared to 10.10. I am comfortable with
modifying that so I can get rid of the "Cannot Display this video mode"
error I have a Dell Flat Panel 17"LCD. I didn't have an issue with
10.10 but this newer upgrade is doing something different at startup.
Do you know which file Ubuntu looks at for video settings before it
tries to show the Grub2 Menu? Thanks for your help. When I ran the
sudo update-grub I can see all the entries in the terminal window, and
once Ubuntu starts I can see the login and my desktop it is just an
initial display setting that is screwy. If I use a printout from the
terminal window and count while pressing the down arrow I can move about
the grub menu I just can't see it.

The Startup Manager did the trick without any major headaches. Thank you very much for the help.

Je vous remercie (Hopefully this is correct.
