bootup page in dual boot installation

Asked by Joe Beall

Bought a new Dell Inspiron 580 (Core i3 550, 8GB RAM, Win 7 64 bit preloaded). After getting rid of all the apps I didn't want in
Windows I proceeded to install Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit first running as a live CD and then installing as dual boot using the "side-by-side" option of partitioning. I have done this before on my old Win XP box and it has always worked just fine. After completing the Ubu install I restarted and tried to access the Windows side at the boot up page but the cursor will not move off the top selection, which is Ubuntu 10.10. Windows 7 loader is in the list at the bottom but using either the Pg Up/Dn or arrow keys does nothing.
Any ideas?
I saw a post which described a similar problem and the solution seemed to be to play around with the grub loader. I've never done this and I'm not even sure whether it applies to my issue.

Hi actionparsnip,
No, I don't need Windows to be the first entry in the menu, I just need to be able to navigate down the list so I can select it. I would rather keep Ubu as my first entry as this is what I use 90% of the time. The way it is now the cursor is frozen on Ubu.
Thanks for the try, though.

Set your USB to be in legacy mode in BIOS

Everyone can stand down from yellow alert!! I found the problem(s), I think. I went to BIOS and looked around for a way to switch to legacy mode, as suggested by actionparsnip. Couldn't find any menus to do exactly that so I selected to restore defaults. I think I also may have had a hardware issue with the USB port being used by my keyboard as I switched ports and now everything works!!
Many thanks to kamalesh and actionparsnip for taking the time to help.
